Case Study of Advocacy
A secondary school excluded a girl for fighting with two other girls during school time. The other girls were said to have been reprimanded. The school claimed that since this was the girl’s second time she was involved in fight exclusion was permanent. A letter went out to the parents to that effect. The Board of Governor’s panel upheld the Head’s view. At the Independent Appeals Stage, a Solicitor working on behalf of FEAST represented the pupil. It was established during the hearing that the school had not put any pastoral support or procedure in place to help understand and modify this so called attitude. It could not also be proved what action was taken against the other pupils. The panel rejected the school’s case and re-instated the girl. The aim to ensure equality of access to opportunities and developments won the day
