Enhancement of Curriculum
Parents/carers can request help with the curriculum. This is then provided either by the Mentor or at a Supplementary environment such as a Saturday school.
FEAST’s experience in this area is considerable.
Case Study of Enhancement of Curriculum
A school located in Southwark, South London where 85% of the population was from ethnic minorities had a low pass and attendance rate for history. It was viewed by the school that not enough was being done to educate them of their own history. For example Black or Asian history. So FEAST was called in to enhance the history syllabus. This was done by FEAST organising with a history lecturer to come in and give a talk to the students. The school then saw an increase in attendance to history classes and subsequently saw an improvement in the pass rate for history.
Evaluation
This project is evaluated in terms of the ease in which the young person interacts aiming to enhance their social skills.
Art & Sports Projects
The aim of the mentoring project is to provide support, guidance and encouragement to the Mentee in order to help him/her achieve aims and ambitions in school work, personal behaviour and social skills. There will be group work in the form of an art club and tennis lessons, along with one to one sessions where the children will be able to discuss any issues they have, academically or socially.
This mentoring project has been running at Newfield Primary School for many years and has had great success in helping children improve their academic skills, along with building up self esteem, confidence and giving the children a variety of enjoyable and educational activities to take part in.
This term’s project will be in the form of an afternoon art club that is supervised by a professional artist, along with two long standing mentors. The children will be required to take part in discussions about what drawing/painting they would like to create individually and in a group. They will then be shown a number of drawing techniques and styles to which they may choose one and go on to create a master piece. There will also be tennis lessons for children that have completed art work to the best of their ability.
In Newfield Primary School we are hoping to make a wall of fame which will outside the Head’s office. All outstanding pieces of art work will be displayed on the ‘Wall of Fame’ along with other great pieces of work completed by the children in the school. This will give children the opportunity to see their work on display and to be proud of what they have created.
At F.E.A.S.T, our goal is to guide children through their schooling and provide a variety of projects which will be beneficial and hopefully enjoyable to them! F.E.A.S.T has devised a ‘Mentor/Mentee agreement’ that will be signed by each of the children and the mentor that will make sure the child knows what the guidelines are and what assistance is available to them.
