The A Team is a group of people that have been grouped by FEAST to combat some of the more serious problems in schools: such as gangs, bullying, and other types of intimidation. All members of the A Team are longstanding and experienced mentors, working alongside a project leader. All have been working for FEAST providing support for disaffected children for schools in the borough of Brent for a number of years.
The A Team consists of four members:
Project manager
Age: 34
Gender: Male
Nationality: British born African/English
Experience: Working with FEAST for 6 years. The project manager provides programs and activities for pupils part take in and also oversees the correct delivery of these programs. He is very experienced with dealing with more serious disruptions/ issues in schools.
Skills/Qualifications: Honours Degree in Psychology and Education, Tennis coach, Landscape Gardener (5 years), counselling, personality and intelligence courses, musical and artistic background and computer literate.
Life experience: Born and raised in North London he has an immense understanding of issues that face urban youth today. He has experienced the difficulties of growing up in an underprivileged urban environment and how that affects and how that impacts school life. He was excluded from Secondary school, so is able to empathise and offer a wealth of advice from a position of first hand experience. That clear perspective enables him to offer alternatives to inappropriate behaviours as well as reasons for need for better behaviour.
Learning Mentor
Age: 32
Nationality: British born West Indian
Experience: Three years working in Brent with disaffected children.
Skills/Qualifications: Honours degree in Illustration, Qualified working illustrator.
Life experience: Born and raised in Hackney and has experienced a wide range of cultural experiences. As a learning mentor he has worked with FEAST for 4 years and has a wealth of experience in working with disaffected and disadvantaged children. This learning mentor is also a qualified, working illustrator of children’s books. This is a great advantage as children show a lot of respect and admiration for his artistic skills. The help, advice and guidance the illustrator provides for the pupils when producing a piece of art work helps to build a strong working relationship.

Nationality: British born West Indian
Experience: Three years working in Brent with disaffected children.

Life experience: Born and raised in West London
Learning Mentor
Age: 38
Gender: Male
Nationality: British born West Indian
Experience: Three years working in Brent with disaffected children. Runs a successful Saturday school.
Skills/Qualifications: Honours Degree in English literature and Education studies, qualified carpenter.
Life experience: Born and raised in East London, from a very large family, poor background, experienced difficulties during school, has seen many people in the community suffer due to lack of positive role models, lack of jobs/qualifications. Wants to make a difference in pupils lives so they do not have to suffer as many disaffected children do, worked with apprentices during his career as a carpenter, and has a fantastic rapport/communication with pupils. He also provides specific academic support in literacy for pupils falling behind.
Overall summary:
All of the A-team has a great rapport and understanding for children that are experiencing various forms of disaffection in and out of school. All members of the A-Team have been selected because of their:
· Backgrounds and heritage.
· Varied and extensive life experience in schools with children that have behavioural and emotional difficulties.
· Experience in dealing with pupils that are at risk of exclusion.
· Passion for helping disaffected children and commitment to making a difference in these children’s lives.
The team also has a number of individual skills which help them to relate to pupils by offering exciting projects that capture pupil’s attention and focus. The team members are experienced in tackling gangs, bullying, and other types of intimidation in schools. The A-Team is available for short periods of time and will work along side learning mentors already established in the school. The strategies and methods used by the A-Team to combat issues can be carried on by staff at the school and arrangements can be made for the A-Team to re-visit schools to check on progress of pupils.
